98 TA automatic infrequently driven has a new issue.

When I shift to drive or reverse, it races from 700 at neutral to a point where the brakes have difficulty holding back.

Any idea what's going on?

No, I can't say it is.

As soon as you put it into gear, it goes from idle to where the brakes have difficulty holding it back.

Sorry about the delay, but it occurred to me that before this problem began, I went to use the car and found the battery weak.

I charged it overnight with the battery still in and connected.

The following day, the car started right up, rpm normal at about 1200 to 1300, and kicked down to 700 once at operating temperature.

I put my foot on the brake and shifted into reverse without touching the gas, and the RPMs su ged up.

I got back into neutral, and the RPMs dropped to 700

I tried Drive with the same result.

Any ideas on the cause would be greatly appreciated.
