1979 Four Speed Trans Am

I’ve come across a 1979 T/A with numbers matching 400 and four-speed tranny.

It looks to be a WS6 also, or at least with a rear disc and larger rear sway bar.

Would this be considered a rare car?

Presently it’s sporting a Formula hood, and the original is leaning against the fence.

Yes, it’s 2W87Z9L139815.

The VIN is saying that it's a Coupe.

2U would be a Formula TA.

I would have to say yes.

If it is 1979 with a 400/4spd and that's what the vin is telling you.

I think that in 1979 only about 1200 cars were produced that have that combination.

Because the 403 was primarily used in 1979 and 1980.

To clarify all that information:

It is absolutely a rare car.

1979 400/4-speed part prices are among the highest priced parts out there as they are scarce and hard to find complete.

For 1979, W87 denotes Trans Am, U87 denotes Formula.

That VIN, without a doubt, is a 1979 400/4-speed T/A, as there is a Z in the VIN denoting 400 Pontiac.

They actually made around 10,000 W72 400 cars in 1979; 1102 was the number of Special Edition Y84's with that engine combo.

A Formula and a T/A are two different things, and there is no "Formula T/A"

Additionally, the 403 was discontinued in 1979 and was never used in any car in 1980.

I purchased the 79 T/A for $550.

It will need a complete restoration.

All is there but the shocker hood and 4speed Tranny.

The original 400 is fresh, built bored over .030, and ready to go.

I hope to start over the winter this year.

Rails look good.

Just the trunk is bad and a little on the floor pans.

Once I’ve replaced that, I’ll strip it down of all the sheet metal and start on the body.
