Hi guys, I thought this would make an interesting topic & in light of the recent Turbo350 posts, this could be helpful.

The trans on my 79 403 10th Anniversary has been groaning & slipping for some time; it got so bad in the end that it wouldn’t move without revving to the sky, so it went off to a good friend who’s a trans expert.

He sent me these pix; they show some incredible levels of friction plate failure.

It's amazing it even moved!

The reverse drum failed & is the TH350’s Achilles Heel; it had started as just a short delay in engaging gear but soon grew into a much more significant problem.

Here, you can see the friction plates are almost totally stripped of material & are trying to weld themselves together.

The resulting heat eventually shatters the steel end retainer plate in the forward clutch & the debris ends up being distributed around the gearbox, destroying the pump housing & all seals.

Total strip completell rebuild with new components was the only option, and some performance shift mods were carried out at the same time, and the box is perfect now!👌👌
