Hi, I recently had my 71 455 engine rebuilt by a reputable engine rebuilder.

The problem is my oil pressure is now over 80 psi and pegging my gauge.

I pulled the engine out to replace the rear seal leaking, and they removed the Melling oil pump and installed a new one in case that was the problem, only to have it read the same 80 psi warmed up and 60 psi at idle.

They now are saying this is normal with the new pump.

My question is this normal, and will I do damage running it at that pressure.

Keep in mind I have less than 50 actual miles on this engine.

I have another GM Ride w those OP #s.

The engine is a CL lose relative, an Olds 400ci ‘67 442.

After rebuild several years ago on the stock 400ci eng.

The oil pressure went from the middle of the gauge to the top, almost pegged.

With miles it has dropped a bit but not much.

W research as U will find what Rocket said to b true.

I went w a performance high volume pump as I went .060” over & perf’ed the engine a bit.

Here’s a fairly easy cheap sanity check.

Buy a mechanical bench OP gauge & check independent of gauge in the car.

I will assure u if it matches & if not u will have an accurate reading & know either u have a problem w ur car's gauge or sending unit.
