I need to access the diff gears but have a transverse muffler.

I figured I could get better access if I put the rear on jack stands and let the diff hang.

Where is a good jack stand location to get this done?

I was thinking of the spot right before the leaf springs (pic), but that might not be very stable.

It depends on whether the jack stands or jack cradle type can lock into a suitable area.

I often use the rear of my subframe connector mounts or even the rear subframe, but you probably don't have the connectors.

That leaf spring area would be good if you can securely fit it.

Grab plenty of solid timber blocks, too; you may be able to jack up the entire rear using the diff center until the wheels are off the ground, add your stands, then drop diff down while taking up most of the weight on the stands but still some on diff.

Removing the rear wheels for access will also allow you to drop the diff lower than with on. It may be enough to lower the axle below the muffler for access.

It may be easier to remove the muffler, with lots of hangers and things supported by it, though, to tie up or remove.
