Howdy fellow Trans ammers,

I am interested in knowing if a 1968 400 Pontiac engine will fit in a 79 subframe?

Or for that matter, how about any year 400?

I am not picky about what year engine I have in there since it's not numbers matching.

Any enlightenment would be appreciated and, I'm new here and looking forward to tapping everyone for build help as I'm in the teardown/organizing/master plan stage.

I'm stockpiling parts and making room in the garage.

Thanks,
Mark

1970 was the year Pontiac changed the mounting lugs on the engine blocks for the Firebirds.

1970 until the last of the 400s in 1979 had both mounting legs, so you could put a newer engine into a first-generation Firebird, but not a 1969 engine or older into a second-generation Firebird.

Some vendors have come up with a custom mount to help you with your older engine into a second generation.

Good luck finding them.
