Hi All, 1979 Firebird Formula here.

I just bought this: https://classiccars.com/listings/view/1507334/1979-pontiac-firebird-for-sale-in-ft-worth-texas-76137

It is about as original as it gets, down to the smog pump.

As with these cars, it can't get out of its own way, so I will try to decide if I should drop in a new crate motor, put in a Corvette engine, or put up with the 403.

The first order of business is to delete the smog pump.

I've seen the thread about this, and I'll start by removing the belt.

Let me know if that's a bad idea; otherwise, I'll start there.

Thanks, Ed

It depends if you want to keep it stock to keep the value.

PTA Staff
I already think keeping as much stock as possible is a good idea.

Probably start with a better actual dual exhaust system, maybe some headers?

It seems like a very solid motor with under 100k miles on it.

I'll start looking around for a shop that can do custom exhaust.

Is a cat converter mandatory, or are better converters out there now?

Everything on the vehicle is stock.

I'm thinking if I can get close to 300hp without major mods, I'll be happy to drive it.

I will probably also start focusing on the front-end and suspension-type stuff.

Maybe new rear springs.

So far, I've removed the smog pump belt, which quieted things down in the engine compartment.

I also got the AC blowing cold.

It will be interesting to see how long that lasts.

Please forgive my tendency to ramble; I'm excited because I've waited most of my adult life to have a car like this.

It is not perfect, but it is within reach for what it needs.
