78 Trans Am Electric Cooling Fan?

I have electric fans in my 78 Trans Am.

When the fans are running with the car at idle, my temps go up, yes, I know that's normal, but when I open the hood, the temps go down.

Asking the question, the gentleman that installed my Dakota gauges believes it is because my fans are entirely encased.

This is a cold-case radiator, and he tells me they should not be completely encased, and that I should remove as much of it as possible to let more airflow.

Can anybody tell me if his theory is correct?

Two questions.

1. My fans go on at 180, but they shut off at 160, which my motor never gets below while running, so my fans constantly run.

2. I want to put a kit on them where they come on at 190 and shut off at 180.

Is this a good thing to do?

THANK YOU FOR ANY RESPONSE

I’d have to agree that those fans appear to be restricting airflow.

I’ve not personally tried electric fans, but it’s not uncommon for people to find that a factory fan cools better.

Not what you asked, though; just putting it out there.

Fans on at 190 print wouldn’t be an issue, but do you know what thermostat you’re running?

Hello, I am running a 180 thermostat.

My thinking is that the fans go off as the thermostat opens.

I’m no engineer, but most factory setups with electric fans have the temp set above the thermostat temp for the fans to turn on.

Hello sir.

Thank you for your response.

I agree.

My thermostat opens at 180 right now.

My setup is fans come on at 180 and dont go off until 160, which my car never goes below while running.

So my fans constantly run.

I will put a kit in where my fans kick on at 190 and turn off at 180.

Thank you.

I used a flex fan in front and dual fans on the backside that only come with anything over 220.
