Converting to an EFI, if correctly set up and tuned for your 403, would improve performance and get much better gas mileage than with a carburetor.
The '71 was rebuilt, by yours truly, with a Crower Stage 3 cam shoved into the YE 455HO block, all casting flash removed, then Glyptal painted internal block for improved oil returning to pump.
