I just purchased an 84 trans am.

I had 2 different ones when they were new.

Anyway, I’m planning an engine swap with tranny. 2 questions.

First, can it be converted to stick?

Just a thought as my first one purchased new in 84 had the dreaded t5 tranny that blew up at 50k.

I still loved that car.

Second, if I stick with the auto which I expect to, can I put a T350 or 400 in with no major mods.

The motor in this car is a not computer motor so I’m thinking of the 350 swap from Jegs with the tranny and leaving it noncomputer controlled.

What are your thoughts?

I haven’t done this type of thing for 40 yrs so I’m a little out of the loop on what can be done.

Thanks

@D55olds1 what all does the car need?

Thank you,
PTA Staff
The car is complete.

It does not have the original motor in it.

The guy I got it from doesn't know the origin of the motor either.

What I know is it is Pontiac blue.

What does that mean IDK. I haven't gotten into it enough yet.

What I do know is the sensors and computer are disconnected.

The transmission is original I believe. It has some sort of box on the dash that i have to use for something for the transmission to go into overdrive. IDK, I don't have the car running yet. Hopefully this week.

He told me the motor starts to knock after it runs for about an hour. I'm thinking of rod bearing when it gets hot.

Don't have anything on that yet.

So what I would like to do is a motor and tranny swap. Old school. No computer stuff at all. IDK, is this viable?
