Did you try replacing the ICM first?
I just went through this process for the past few months and found out that the original ICM that I purchased was a non GM part.
Get a GM part for your car.
My car now has started and has a spark.
Make sure you put the white heat cream on the bottom...
I want to thank all the people who responded on all the forums.
You were all great.
I still can't believe a small electrical component that I had initially bought from Rock Auto did not work.
After going back to Rock Auto and getting a GM part, it worked.
I also learned always to get a GM...
The part number is D1918 from Rock Auto.
Since I have an ECM and non-Turbo, I had to get the five-prong ICM from the Turbo column
I have had it working now for a week in the driveway and around the block.
The car has not shut down yet.
It has been raining a lot recently, and since I...
Just to let you know that I just installed the new IEC (AC Delco, GM), and the car has spark and ran for an hour without shutting down in my driveway.
The temp did go to 220 but went to 210 once I took it around the block.
The fuel pump is OK.
verified that there was fuel.
I now do not have a spark.
I believe that the ICM may be faulty.
I have ordered a GM one.
It should be in in a few weeks.
I changed the Coil and found out that my car has an ECM.
I am thinking of bypassing it once I figure out...
I have gone on YouTube and other sites and have read about the electronic control module and the coil to be replaced.
I have ordered the two parts and am waiting for delivery.
Once installed and hopefully working, I will let you know if it works.
Just wondering, what is the normal running temperature with a 195-degree thermostat?
I have a 1980 Trans Am, 4.9L engine, with air.
I just changed the thermostat twice now, and the temperature shows just above 220 and then dies.
Just an update on what has been going on with my 1980 Firebird.
I bought a new gas tank and installed it and blew out the lines before installing it.
I got the carb redone again.
I stated the car and had it run for a while until it got to operating temperature and then it happened...
Just wondering what the Inside Diameter of the vacuum hoses for a 1980 Trans Am 4.9L engine is?
When I measure, and due to the hoses being old, I have a few different measurements.
If I wanted to order new hoses, is 4mm, 6mm, and 8mm ID enough?
And how long should I order? 10 feet, 15ft...
I need some help.
I just bought a new car cover that said it was waterproof, and it rained last night, and I had the car outside covered.
When I took the cover off this afternoon, I noticed that it was stained with some white stain.
I tried washing it off with soap and water and it is...
Hi Bob, welcome.
To keep everyone up to date on my progress.
I now have ordered a new gas tank and had the carb cleaned out again.
Waiting for the tank now. should be here in a few weeks.
Kills me to see the car in the garage on these beautiful weekends??
I have gone on a few sites and found firebird central with the following:
1979 - 1981 Pontiac Firebird Fuel Gas Tank, Premium Quality
Correct Fuel Gas Tank for 79 - 81 Pontiac Firebird models.
Made with corrosion-resistant O.E.M. approved Ni Terne steel.
I pulled the fuel line off and turned on the engine, and had the fuel dump into a jar.
It looks like there is debris in the gas tank.
This may be plugging the carb and causing the carb to stall.
Since the tank is 40 years old, I am thinking of replacing the tank.
The guy who...
I am hoping someone out there can help me.
I am looking for a good clean diagram/sketch or pictures of the vacuum hoses for a 1980 Transam, 4.9 with electronic choke, air pollution pump, electronic choke relay, etc.
It starts really well from cold.
The choke plate slowly opens up and then, when warm, stays open.
After running for a while, it then starts to run a bit rough then dies.
It will start up right away and run nicely, then just dies.
I did play around with the idle screw on the...
Just an update on the car.
The wiper motor and pump have been replaced and working now.
However, I now have a problem with the carb or vacuum lines, I think.
The car starts, warms up then dies. I have posted to get help.
Hoping someone out there can help me.
I got my carb redid, transmission, and a slew of other things.
It was running OK; however, the choke relay under the dash was buzzing.
I replaced it with a new relay, and the buzzing stopped.
The choke works fine now. my problem now is when the...
